Parents and their children at the beach #2

Ouders en hun kindren op het strand #2
oil on canvas - 30 x 170 cm
painted on location - Wed 24 June 2020

SOLD

On a tropical hot day, very rare here in Holland, i was crazy enough to go make this painting on location. However I enjoyed all the people I ended up using as models to creat this scene. For children, having the time of their lives. Playing in that very shallow water at the beach.

Two details f9r better viewing.

Hommage to South Beach, The Hague

Oude aan Zuiderstrand, Den Haag #1
oil on canvas - 30 x 170 cm
painted on location - 19 June 2020

SOLD

Start of a lovely day, gonig to be a little more busy than what you see in this painting, but not to worry, as this beach is so wide one never feels claustrophobic. As a matter of fact, good thing I adapted using this format fr that works best with these beaches.  Here below 2 details.

The Lifting of the fog, Westduinpark, The Hague

Kwartelpad, Westduinpark in de mist
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
painted on location - thurs. 5 Dec 2019

SOLD

This must be the 8th or 9th time i make a painting from this location. And after a long wait, I finally got a chance to paint this scene with mist. Characteristic of coastal environments, the mist is a commen occurence.  However to paint it can be difficult, as it is always either coming or going. I found a solution, and it allows me to paint it with accuracy. A close up below for better viewing.

South Beach of The Hague is Hot

Zuiderstrand, DH op een warme zomersdag
oil on linen - 40 x 175 cm
painted on location - 23 July 2019

SOLD

Yes ladies and gentlemen, rarely does the temperature go above 32 Celsius here in The Lowlands. So when it does, then you can be assured that the beaches will be full. For me the best time to enjoy our spacious beaches are early in the morning. When the Sun is  warming things up, and still tolerable. Hey, but that's only my modest opinion. Certainly for painting this view, mornings are the best.

The (not so) Quiet Beach, in action

Het stillestrand, leeft
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 (wow that is big! / 20" x 59")
painted on location -  Thursday 30 August 2018

SOLD

Yes ladies and gentlemen, with the wind rustling about, tossing and turning over just about any small object that is not properly secured, the so called Quiet beach is fully alive and well. Luxurious typical Dutch clouds racing about in the direction that the wind will have them go, cast enormous shadows on the otherwise luminous sandy beach! The Sunlight always commanding the atmospheric condition, and at the same time, filling the surface of the sea water with the colours of her choice.....just another great day to be on location. Taking this all in visually, and working my ass off to get it on a large piece of stretched linen, that becomes the challenge of the moment. something I'm willing to take on, give it my best shoot.  And for better or for worse, I expose the results to the public at large, opening myself to ridicule or praise, depends on who's doing the looking I suppose.

Life at the quiet beach, The Hague, Holland

De Supper of ingang bij DeKwartel
oil on linen - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Wed 04 July 2018

A friendly and inviting summer scene, here at the Quiet beach in The Hague. Keeping busy by beach paviljion De Kwartel, were almost two decades ago I started painting on location. Then it had much more of a bohemian atmosphere, and Ed would kindly offer me an espresso, now and then.

even on a gloomy winters day

zelfs op een sombere winterdag
oil on canvas - 25 x 150 cm
painted on location/and in studio - Dec.2017/Jan 2018

SOLD

You know I truly believe in the saying, "there is beauty all around, just a matter of seeing it". For me it is in the details that one must pay attention, in order to see that beauty. Let me explain, in regards to this art work.  Starting with the rhythmic action of the rolling waves, bathed in all the shades that an emerald green light has to offer. Or look to that warm glow through the mist, on the horizon.  Casting light on objects and buildings mysteriously coming and going, like one might recall, in an almost forgotten distant dream. Is it any wonder that while I was working on this painting on location the professional and amateur photographers alike were to be spotted, clicking away. capturing the moods of this soft and peaceful morning at Scheveningen Boulevard.   Yes all this and more can be found, even on a gloomy winters day.

Scheveningen, misty and Beautiful.

Scheveningen, wat kan ze zo mooi  zijn.
oil on canvas - 25 x 150 cm
painted on location - Tuesday 29 August 2017
SOLD

What a pleasure it is for me to be on location on such days as this! The Sun shines, brightly yet gently, as the morning is in full swing, yet the Sun is at a distance comfortable for our sensitive skin. People, the crowds, are still at a tolerable level. From this point Scheveningen can be digested and appreciated, as the skyline doesn't dominate the overall scenery. It is no wonder hundreds if not thousands of Nederlanders daily make a walk to Wassenaarseslag, on such days, and who could blame them really!

Greetings from Scheveningen

Groeten uit Scheveningen
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted on location in 5 sittings - March 2017
SOLD

Not the first time I've painted this scenery, but indeed the 1st time from so far out on the South pier, which is in fact the entrance to the harbor here in Scheveningen. Spring is in the air, the beach cafes are back, there is an exciting buzz on the beach, all three of them, the one north of this scene, the beach depicted, and the one south, (were I paint most of the time).  Very challenging to work this format on location, especially when the windforce starts reaching numbers from 5 onwards!

Scheveningen Beach in a winters fairy tale

Scheveningen strand en boulevard als een Sprookje
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted - Sun 12/Mon 13 Feb 2017

SOLD

What's there to say, but that I am so grateful that we finally had a downfall of that fluffy white stuff here on the coast of Holland! Everybody was excitingly happy, especially the little ones. And me I was really happy that i had the opportunity to get on location, and re work a painting that I made in December 2015 of this scenery! Thus the composition was already complete when I started on this painting.  You know it's funny, how some days one could paint better than on other days! I guess it is the same with anything one does. For me this was a day were the juice was flowing, fast and powerful, and what resulted is what you see. By the comments people were making as they stopped to have a look, and there were many people, as it was a soft winters sunshiny day, I felt I had accomplished a painting which will give much pleasure to the viewer. And that my dear friends, is a gift, from The Creator to me and from my hands to you. Here below a fine picture of me working on this painting taken by Maurice Haak, from This is The Hague, Tourist Information Centre.

A magic winters moment at Scheveningen

Een winters magisch moment op Schevening
oil on canvas - 20 x 140 cm
painted on location and studio -  Jan 9-11 2017
SOLD

I have been waiting a long time to make this painting. To capture the unique Scheveningen Boulevard and Pier under the influence of mist. It didn't come easy as I started this work on location were i had to contend with wind and now and again light rainfall. As a matter of fact had to quickly pack up my gear and get out of the rain as, it was starting to cause havoc with the oil paint. Worked on the painting in two settings in the atelier, until this result was attained.

Warmth of Indian Summer days I, South Beach, DH

Genieten van de Indian summers weer I
oil on canvas - 20 x 140 cm
painted on location - 13 Sept 2016
SOLD

The Indian summer has been with us for a long stay this year, and most Dutch people are very content with this decision of Mother Nature. I have been able to get on location on a few of these days, and bring to you a the warm moments, to enjoy any time of the year. This format seems to be custom made  for our beach here on the coast of The Lowlands. Below a detail of the above painting, showing a sunbather taking in all those nurturing Sun rays.

Race of The Classics, View off South Beach, The Hague

Race of The Classics, Gezicht vanaf Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas, 30 x 150 cm
painted on location, Friday 16 October 2015
SOLD

As if I was lead there by some unseen force, it was my destiny to be at the right place at the right time, to immortalise this very rare view, off the coast of Scheveningen, Holland.  I was not planning to be painting that morning, Actually I went to collect my parasol, at the beach, and low and behold, this happening was just getting started, they were still leaving the harbour.  I immediately ran back to my car, drove as quickly as possible to my studio, grabbed my gear and was back on location. I couldn't believe my eyes, there must have been what seemed like 30 or more of these babies, circling, manoeuvring in all directions.  Everybody on the beach was mesmerised, all making films on their mobiles. I'm pretty sure I was the only painter making a painting, and that my dear friends is what makes this work truly unique. Does anybody know someone who works for archival department, city of The Hague, am sure they would be interested!

Scheveningen Beach & Boulevard and Zuiderstrand on a summers night

Il Pittore's vision of Scheveningen Beach
oil on canvas - 30 x 200 cm
painted mostly on location - Started 4th of June - ended in studio 9th of July 2015
SOLD

Here I undertook the monumental task of making such an enormous XXXL canvas on location! I was situated exactly on the Noordelijk havenhoofd about 90 meters shy of the small red and white stripped lighthouse. Thus the wind was keeping me good company most of the time. In fact, it liked to pat me on the back, now and then. On one occasion all my gear hit the deck, lucky the damage was sustainable. Capturing the Sun's morning rays as they are just about to embrace the west side of the buildings and other objects portrayed, I felt this was the right moment to freeze, thus giving the onlookers something interesting to digest.

Warm glow over Zuiderstrand
oil on canvas - 20 x 60 cm
painted on location - Monday 3 August 2015
SOLD

Here I bring to you the situation at hand in these warm summer days we are being gifted with having here in The Lowlands. I found myself next to the beach cafe De Kwartel, about half way between Scheveningen and Kijkduin. This stretch of beach, being one of Hollands best kept secrets, most Dutch people don't know that The Hague has a seriously gorgeous beach front, (they think it is all happening in Scheveningen). And you know what ,Hagenaars like it just that way, thus they have the beach all to themselves!

Scheveningen Boulevard with morning light # 2

Scheveningen Aan Zee, met ochtend licht,
oil on mdf - 22 x 180 cm
painted on location - 8 settings from 05 March 2015 - 18 March 2015
SOLD

This is the 2nd time I paint this view. Last year also in March I was working from the Southern branch of the harbour entrance (Zuidelijk Havenhoofd, Buitenhaven). This is the view from the Northern branch of the harbour entrance (Noordelijk Havenhoofd). lt can be difficult to work with such a wide panoramic format on this location, as the wind likes to surprise you from time to time. On one occasion my easel with painting fill to the ground, lucky the damage was easy to repair.  After that I was anchoring my gear with a large shopping bag full of sand. With the morning light this view is spectacular, thus I was confined to working for no more than 2 hrs at a time. Below a close up of the Pier, which is undergoing renovations at present.

After a storm, the coast line is scattered with living shell life that provides optimal feeding for seagulls. XXL View of Scheveningen pier from South Beach.

XXL Gezicht op Scheveningen vanaf Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on linen - 40 x 210 cm
painted on location on 3 occasions-  finished 6 July 2013
SOLD

Not the easiest thing to paint this size on location! However I managed it, with the help of my trustworthy 3 meter diameter parasol, used as a wind breaker. You could tell by the waves that the wind is still blowing quite strong, but the summer temperatures are with us now, so a pleasure to be at this location. It is well after dinner hour, thus crowds have thinned out. Just the way I like to paint these beach scenes. When you look at this painting carefully, you will see a lot going on, thus the 3 close ups below.  Take care and enjoy the summer.
