Entrance to beach, by beach pavilion Zuid

Ingang naar strand bij strandpaviljoen Zuid
oil on canvas - 40 x 60 cm
painted on location - 4 May 2023

SOLD

On location nice and early on this one. Personally I much prefer these quite views at the beach. There's a certain meditative quality that I manage to capture as a result. The Dutch flag is hanging at half mask in order to honor the dead who gave their life's for our Freedom.

South Beach, The Hague #3 - 2021

 Zuiderstrand, Den Haag #3 - 2021
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 25 Feb 2021

SOLD

Early morning view of this beautiful piece of Holland. Winter skies are dramatic and always a challenge to paint. As usual, with these wide panoramic views I purposefully don't paint in too many people. The few that I do add are usually far off, which helps me bring over a since of depth.  One of the reasons that I like to make these paintings is to offer to the eventual owner of these paintings a sense of space and openness. In a small country as Netherlands this can be, and usually is,  much appreciated.

Parents and their children at the beach #5

Ouders en hun kinderen op het strand #5
oil on linnen - 50 x 175 cm
painted on location - Tues 11 Aug 2020

SOLD

The largest of this series was made on a really hot summers day, was off to an early start, thus most of the work was done, with comfortable temperature. I had to make use of the 3M parasol which I have ready for me at the strandpavilijoen De Staat, otherwise I would have melted in the heat! There is alot going on in this work, but not too much. I left out at least 70% of the crowds sunbathing or otherwise enjoying the fresh Sea water that afternoon. It was soo hot, i also felt compelled to take a dip in the Sea on a few occasions, with my shirt and shorts on.

Mates kicking the ball on the beach

Vrienden schoppen de bal op het strand
oil on MDF - 17 x  64cm
painted on location -  Thurss 30 July 2020

SOLD

This is a classic view which I paint often. However every painting tellss a different story. Here it was early evening, as you can see space calor is to be found at this location. I was inspired to paint in those friends kicking a soccer ball, I liked the uniformity of their attire, and will it was jusst the right spice to give this view that special flavour.

Family fun by the Sea

Familie uitje aan Zee
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Monday 27 April 2020

SOL

My latest painted on a day the was comfortably warm, not really hot like in summer. With all this social distancing going on, there really is no place better to go than the spacious beaches we have right ar our doorstep. As long as not thousands show up at the same time, it is quiet safe. A simple composition, made lively with the those water pools on the forground, showing reflections of the kids enjoying the fresh water. A detail below, as this format is really difficult to represent properly on this social platform.

Free at last

eindelijk vrij
oil on canvas - 50 x 100 cm
painted on location - Monday 6 April 2020

SOL

I feel this painting is true to the expession, less is more. Doing my best to bring the Sea in focus. A close up view of a gentle rolling wave, a sailboat off in the distance, a cloudless blue sky with some haze on the horizon, and God only knows what lies under the surface of the North Sea.  A simple view, yet it affords soo much space and freedom, at times just what we need, to pass the time of day.

Westduinpark, The Hague

pad met uitzicht, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 20 x 30 cm
painted on location - Wed. 5 Feb. 2020

SOLD

When the Sun shines magic in tthe dunes takes place. The dark shadows in contrast with the lightened areas creates all sorts of forms and shapes, a feast for the eyes really. And yeah we outdoor painters love this scenario. It felt fine for me to be on a location where approx. 12 years ago I started working on my ongoing, Wet Paintings from The Lowlands project. I would like to express a special thank you to all the persons that have been following me in these years.

Freedom

Vrijheid
oil on linen - 20 x 115 cm
painted on location - Wednesday 15 May 2019

SOLD

Got to the beach this morning, and nothing dramatic going on. Situation was very peaceful, the warmth of the Sun was good to feel, on what little exposed skin I had meeting the Sun's rays. It is still rather cold, thus the winter jacket is still in use. Thus I thought, why not just paint an image that brings across this feeling of tranquility and freedom, which I felt in that moment, thus this work was created.... Below a shot of the work in progress taken by a passer by, glad she shared it with me.

Path to the beach, The Hague

Strandaanslag # 10 - Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 24 x 30 cm
painted on location - Thurs 18 April 2019

SOLD

Here I decided to make a quaint scene of the beach entrance, were I usually go painting. I have taken the liberty to not paint in all the signs and posts, that one encounters at this location. However decided to add the typical so called "Oma fiets" that are very popular in Holland.

The Quiet Beach awakens

Het Stillestrand wordt wakker
oil on linen - 90 x 150 cm
painted on location - Fri. 22 March 2019

SOLD

The cold Winter season has ended, slowly the Spring begins to usher in a lusher palette of colour, as Nature takes delight in the warmth and extra sunlight. It is not too uncommon to come across such a view of this beach, especially in the early morning hours. The fog slowly lifting, during the time whilst I was creating this painting.  I worked with a hasty pace, getting on the linen as much information as possible, by the time I had decided to put my signature on this piece, the sky was entirely blue!   Below a close ups for your viewing pleasure.

What lies beyond.

wat ligt erachter
oil on linnen - 80 x 160 cm
painted in studio - Nov/Dec. 2018
SOLD

Beyond those two breakwater lighthouses at the furthermost tip of the harbour entrance at Scheveningen one really has the feeling to be at the threshold of a mysterious place, especially under these atmospheric conditions.

This almost has the feeling of being a 'dreamscape' and not a seascape.

This is a large version of a painting I made on location, December 2017.

here under a couple of close ups, as it has proven to be almost impossible for me to get a decent picture for digital purposes.

The Setting Sun

Looks like I found a new subject matter! In the past made a few sunset paintings, but this time I decided to use a portrait format size canvas, thus vertical instead of horizontal orientation. The color display at these sunsets can be very explosive, and a feast for the eyes. Indeed a challenge as the downward movement of the Sun goes rather quickly, at this time of day.  Keeping the Haagse School tradition alive, il pittore at your service!

Life at the quiet beach, The Hague, Holland

De Supper of ingang bij DeKwartel
oil on linen - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Wed 04 July 2018

A friendly and inviting summer scene, here at the Quiet beach in The Hague. Keeping busy by beach paviljion De Kwartel, were almost two decades ago I started painting on location. Then it had much more of a bohemian atmosphere, and Ed would kindly offer me an espresso, now and then.

First light
oil on canvas - 70 x 60 cm
painted on location - Friday 25 May 2018
SOLD

Here you have two recent paintings, were I'm putting most of the focus on what's happening at the waters edge. Of course you have the waves rolling in, and the water in either a forward or a backward motion. Depending on the wind, the waves are either gentle or a little wild, as in the above painting. I like to get on location early, avoiding the crowds, and taking advantage of the sun still rising thus casting a softer warm light.

The Red Lighthouse series #4

De Roode Vuurtoren # 11
oil on canvas - 24 x 30 cm
painted on location - Friday 16 March 2018
SOLD

The mist so characteristic of the Sea. Envelops everything and ushers in feelings of calm also melancholy maybe. Gives a chance for us to take rest, decrease activity, stay indoors, as one can feel the moist about to drop from the sky, in the form of rain. As quickly as possible I got this painting made and yes, the fluid drops did show up. Had to use an umbrella to protect the painting, myself I was clothed properly, and stayed dry. BTW that is the Eendracht manoeuvring on the water.

De Roode Vuurtoren # 12
oil on canvas board - 13 x 18 cm
painted on location - Tues. 20 March 2018
SOLD

This little guy was made, as a study for the painting below (#13). Obviously the weather had changed when I worked on the larger piece.

De Roode Vuurtoren # 13
oil on canvas - 50 x 60 cm
painted on location - Wed. 21 March 2018
SOLD

The colour of the water is so surreal in this atmospheric condition,  almost hard to believe, unless you see it for yourself. Started with heavy clouds, by the time I finished the painting, it was a crystal clear blue sky. Not nearly as dramatic as the sky I opted for to represent in this work. A few months later, in the studio I added the people.

De Roode Vuurtoren # 14
oil on canvas - 30 x 40 cm
painted on location - Monday 26 March 2018
SOLD

Painted at the beginning of this week, here is thus far the latest work made in this series. Inspired by that fishing boat heading out, I painted in a fisherman's wife, (clothed in the traditional Schevenings'  attire), with child. I have seen this woman walking on that path 2 weeks ago, thus with that memory was this scene composed.

Soft clouds and seagulls

Zachte wolken en zeemeeuwen
oil on linnen - 90 x 150 cm
painted in studio - Oct 2017

Painted over

Sometimes as the saying goes, Less is more. In a busy world, were everything seems or is in fact fast paced, does the eye not take solace in such  a view? The mind can fill in what the eye cannot see. The imagination can drift away, to places far beyond, soft clouds, three seagulls and shimmering on the horizon.  Indeed, the mysteries of the Sea are many. Is it any wonder what brings you and me to meditate by the Sea.

Solitude and Quietness at Sea

 Eenzaamheid en Rust op Zee
oil on canvas - 70 x 50 cm
painted on location - Sat. 3 June 2017
SOLD

Imagine being on that sailboat and waking up to this situation. Everything is still, very gentle movement of the water, hardly noticeable, except for the distant cries of a few seagulls now and then, not a sound to be heard. In a country like Holland this situation is almost nowhere to be found., and lucky are the few that can experience it. Finding myself on the Island Vlieland, i was witness to this scene, and believe you me didn't waste any time in getting this situation on canvas. On the horizon barely visible is the island Texel. I was just in time to get these gentle nuances of colour recorded,  an hour later the sky broke open, creating a whole different scenario. Below a small work made as a study for this painting.

First time for il pittore on the small island Vlieland,  really loved it their! I'm no stranger to small islands, have spent many warm days, working and painting on the tiny island Panarea, off the coast of Sicily,  a real jewel of the Mediterranean Sea. But Vlieland is on the North Sea, and to experience it with extreme warm weather is truly a blessing! I made a total of 5 paintings, next posting will show the other 2.  This theme of children at the beach is attractive to me at this time, hope you are not getting bored with these postings. Your feedback is always welcome!

The pink sky at dusk

De schemerige roze hemel
oil on canvas - 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 inches)
painted on location - Thurs. 11 May 2017
SOLD

Finding myself in Wijk Aan Zee, NH, for the opening of the International Art Festival, Ezels en Kwasten, instead of listening to the opening speeches, after a lousy dinner, I decided to find a motif to paint, get the ball rolling, you know what I mean.  It was the evening of a rainy overcast day. Thus I didn't have much hope in finding a subject to paint. That is until the sky started to put on this spectacular display of light and color, as the dark clouds were overtaken by the intense light of the Sun, making its downward descent at dusk.  Whilst painting, those crepuscular rays suddenly appeared, causing the horizon to light up. What to do, leave them out or add them in?  Well the choice I made is obvious, and listening to the reactions of my posting on Facebook of this work, it was the right thing to do. The last accent, was the addition of the seagulls. shown as if they are dancing to the rhythms of the beat in our hearts.

Blind vetrouw series  #5
oil on canvas - 30 x 40 cm - (12 x 16 inches)
painted on location (Wassenaarseslag) - Tues. 4 April 2017

SOLD

You can hear the whispering sounds of the gentle rolling waves, and feel the cool freshness of the soft sea breeze. You don't see it, but you trust that it is there, the mighty North Sea. It seems to be resting, after days of hard work. Moving all those tiny particles of sand, that the Dutch trust will reinforce their coastline, thus making the already high stalwart dunes even more higher.....Oh no ladies and gentlemen, the Dutch will not allow the unforgiving North Sea to invade and swallow up their flat and for a good part under sea level self made land. They learned their lesson back in the 16th Century, and will not allow that to take place, ever again!
