Small Seascape & Autumn Colors in the dunes 3 & 4

Paal 36, Zuiderstrand, het Stillestrand
oil on canvas - 20 x 20 cm
painted on location - Tues 28 Oct 2014
SOLD

Back on the beach for the first time in weeks, as I was very sick with a severe cold. Thus I decided to tackle only a small format painting and was inspired by this simple yet atmospherical subject. Of course I gave myself some freedom with the colour scheme, but really it was not far from the truth.

painted on location - Sun 2 Nov 2014

donated to Canadian Embassy, The Hague Fund raising charity, Oct 2015

This canvas was made in the same afternoon as the one below! You can see how dramatically the whole scenery changes when the atmosphere shifts from sunny to overcast, in just a matter of minutes. I kind of like the idea of sitting up on the same location and painting what lies before me. A pleasure one experiences from plein-air painting

This work was made in two sessions, due to the fact that I started it rather late in the afternoon, thus  the bright lighting was vanishing at a rate that was impossible to keep up with. Not a problem, a couple days later the sun was shining in all its glory. Sit up early enough in the afternoon, and the work was finished.

Wassenaarseslag/ Hazy spring day

Strand met mist aan Zee
oil on canvas
40 x 50cm
painted on location - Thurs 22 March 2012
donated for charity fund raiser

A little off my beat and track, but always a pleasure to paint at this location. Not yet fully operative, this beach house cafe has set op some windbreakers to accomodate the sunbathers. In the distance you can vaguely see the hotels on the boulevard at Noordwijk Aan Zee. BTW - those are not black pirate flags you see on those masts, but rather the colors and symbol of one of Hollands finest brews, Hertog Jan.

Looking North from Wassenaarseslag

Wassenaarseslag, op een mooie dag
oil on canvas
40 x 50 cm
painted on location - 9 Oct 2010

donated to charity fund raiser

What caught my interest on this scene was those Kart-sail vehicles. At first I thought they were small sail boats, on close inspection I noticed they had wheels and later saw them racing along the watersedge, on the sand. Although this work was made sometime ago, it is representative of the weather we are actually experiencing in these days!

Lemmer Inner Harbor, Winter Scene

Binnen Haven, Lemmer, Friesland
oil on canvas
60 x 70 cm
painted on location - Wed. 23 Feb 2011

donated to Canadian Fund raising charity, Oct 2015

Whilst visiting with friends and art collectors living in this quaint village in Friesland, I managed to find the time to make this painting, on one hell of a cold winters day! A few hours after this painting was finished, there lay about 4cm of fresh moist snow on the ground. Although there are a few modern buildings in this village centre, it still retains a charm of the original architecture, thus making it a popular toutist attraction, in the summer season.

Autumn colors on The North Sea

Een zacht najaars dag aan de Noord Zee
oil on canvas
20 x 140 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 23 October 2010
SOLD

Because of the two dominate colors on view in this scene, I was thinking of calling this painting, "Panoramic view of the North Sea, purple and green". For those of you who live by the Sea, you know this is not an exaggeration on my part. Actually if anything, it is quite the opposite. I tend to tone down the vibrancy of the colors. I don't have any idea how Van Gogh and the somewhat renowned Haagse School painters like Mesdag, did not pick up on these hue variations. Maybe I haven't seen enough of their works, I hope that is the case. Otherwise I would have to say that, either I am, or they were....colour blind! Again on this composition I decided to leave out the beach, starting exactly at the point were the water meets the land.

A Place in Leiden, # 8/2009

View of Nieuwstraat & Burgsteeg
oil on canvas
40 x 30 cm (16 x 12 in.)
painted on location - Mon 14 and Thurs 17 Dec 2009

Painting donated

I have decieded to call this body of work, A Place in Leiden, and this being the 8th painting that I've made, on location this year, thus the title. Setting myself up on the corner of Middelweg and Nieuwstraat, I chose to capture this quaint winter scene, totally ignoring this huge monumetal church, which I,ve just hinted at on the extreme right. Thanks to Mother Nature, we have been gifted with a fresh clean layer of that fluffy cold white matter, commonly known as snow! Most of the country goes in a panic mode, but il pittore, packs his gear and takes delight in bringing you an a fresh update, here in The Lowlands. For your viewing pleasure, a detail.

Private Colection, The Hague
Donated for charity, Right To Play

Not your usual catamaran clubhouse paintng. There were about 80 vessels spread out on the beach at the clubhouse this weekend. It was am amazing sight to see. The light was very defused, with mist and fog making it not possible for the races to begin. For me it was a bit of a blessing, as the cats stayed on the beach with their sails out, ready to go. As is evident in the painting, vissibilty at sea was zero. This is the 1st of 2 paintings made at this event.

Andreaskerk, Katwijk aan Zee

Old church on the Boulevard, (Oude kerk op de Boulevard)
oil on canvas
30 x 24 cm
painted on location, Mon. 7 July and Thurs. 10 July 2008

WOENSDAGKRANT, Katwijk (9-7-2008)

Will, this posting is dedicated to all my Dutch contacts. I quoted that from a local newspaper. Basically it is refering to a picture which was taken of me working on this canvas. It mentions the painting festival I brought to your attention on the previous posting. That, despite the nasty weather, high winds and drops of rain, I was able to knock off this piece under the protection of an overhanging porch. In fact the weather was so bad I was forced to stop. I returned 3 days later, with continuing bad weather, however, as is evident, with the breaking up of the clouds and some blue sky showing itself, the weather did finally improve. A true wet painting from the Lowlands.
