Beach Entrance #11, WestduinPark, The Hague

Strandslag 11, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Sat. 15 April and Wed. 19 April 2023

SOLD

Decided to produce a body of work showing the entrances to the beach and beach pavilions of The Hague. Here you see a glimpse of  Zuid, with its two white flags and the Dutch flag. I like how the path splits in two, one leading to te beach and the other up through the dunes heading towards Schevening. The days are getting warmer, and although you don't see much activity, belief me, it was pretty busy.

The Homecoming

De Tuiskomst
oil o canvas - 20 x 30 cm
painted on location - Tues 11 May 2021

SOLD

Nothing like entering the safety of a harbor after you sail your vessel through a stormy Sea. Here I have tried to convey this feeling by showing the storm clearing up. Vessel is leaving the dark sea behind and entering onto the still vibrant colored Sea.

Children playground at beach cafe Zuid

Kinderspeelplaats bij strandpaviljoen Zuid,
oil on canvas - 15 x 30 cm
painted on location -  Tues. 2 March 2021

SOLD

Still winter here in The Lowlands, but was happy to make this very summery scene, thanks to the intensive sunlight we had on this day. Open only for take out as they are still preparing to open for the new season, this beach cafe is a favorite for the little ones. There ware also other play stations, however I didn't want to crowd the scene too much.

Ouders en kindren op het strand #3
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Tues 4 Aug 2020

SOLD

This subject seems to be developing into a series. I love the fun aspect of this subject. Kids having the time of their lifes. They feel safe, Mom or Dad is always nearby, and they make friendss instantly. Often they come and ask what am I doing. Or one of the parents or gaurdians bring a child nearby to have a look and explain what I am doing. Furthermore in thesse troubling times I feel this is an image that can bring delight and happiness intoyour household

Hommage on South Beach, The Hague #3

Oude aan Zuiderstrand #3
oil on linen - 30 x 170 cm
painted on location - 12 July 2020

SOLD

This is the 3rd of the Oude to South Beach here in The Hague. This view is painted in the afternoon as then the lighting is just right for this view. Nice Dutch clouds rolling on by, alaways a treat to paint. The new buildings going up in Schevening are starting to block the view of that monumental landmark red lighthouse. You don't see that building as I put to use my artistic freedom and just not painted it in!  again for your viewing pleasure to close ups.

Parents and their children at the beach #2

Ouders en hun kindren op het strand #2
oil on canvas - 30 x 170 cm
painted on location - Wed 24 June 2020

SOLD

On a tropical hot day, very rare here in Holland, i was crazy enough to go make this painting on location. However I enjoyed all the people I ended up using as models to creat this scene. For children, having the time of their lives. Playing in that very shallow water at the beach.

Two details f9r better viewing.

Family fun by the Sea

Familie uitje aan Zee
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Monday 27 April 2020

SOL

My latest painted on a day the was comfortably warm, not really hot like in summer. With all this social distancing going on, there really is no place better to go than the spacious beaches we have right ar our doorstep. As long as not thousands show up at the same time, it is quiet safe. A simple composition, made lively with the those water pools on the forground, showing reflections of the kids enjoying the fresh water. A detail below, as this format is really difficult to represent properly on this social platform.

the big picture and the small picture

Pier,  Schevening #2-2020
oil on canvas - 40 x 50 cm
painted on location - Wed 25 March 2020

SOL

Here I am back at the North Beach, Schevening with the continuation of the Pier series. This time using a traditional landscape format canvas. Still early in the season, and early in the day, thus not many visitors. They are busy building up the beach cafes and other objects after the end of the winter season.

The mangolia stellata, the bumble bee and the lady bug,
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Sat 28 March 202

SOL

In these days we are being asked to stay off the beach when there are too many people, in order to combat the spread of this nasty corona virus. So I will be occasionaly making paintings such as this little intimate scene. Spring is finally in the air, which brings forth all kinds of little creatures, such as the two shown in this painting. In a Universe of their own, these flowers florish, with the help Natures tiny winged creaatures.

Pier and Ligthouse, Schevening

Gezicht op Schevening, met Pier en Vuurtoren
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Mon 9 March 2020

SOLD

I have been looking at this view of Schevening for many years now, but this is the first time I actually paint it. And am glad I did so,  while still the lighthouse is in full view. The people from The Hague know what I am talking about, for you others, that low building in front of the red tower will be demolished soon, and up will be going a luxury apartment building, which will then make this view no more!

The Pier, Schevening #1-2020

Pier, Schevening #1-2020
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 6 Feb 2020

SOLD

I took full advantage of the nice weather we experienced here in The Lowlands last week, thus went to visit the North Beach and decided to make this painting with the theme the Pier, renowned landmark of the coast in Holland. As the weather is still rather chilly not too many people to be seen, however always pet owners taking their beloved dog for a stroll on the beach. Got out on location early enough to catch the Sun highlighting aeras of the buildings and other objects in this sceen. I will be visiting this strech of beach on many more occasions this year, thus the title shows this.

Running dog, Schevening beach

Lopende hond, strand Schevening
oil on board - 25 x 35 cm (approx. 10 x 14")
painted on location - 12 Dec 2019

SOLD

Freedom and space, dogs love it, and that is what they get when their bosses are kind enough to take them out for a stroll at this or any other beach for that matter. Winter has set in, so even though the sun is shining, temperature can be very low. So dress for the occasion and shake a leg, your dog will love you for it!

South Beach of The Hague is Hot

Zuiderstrand, DH op een warme zomersdag
oil on linen - 40 x 175 cm
painted on location - 23 July 2019

SOLD

Yes ladies and gentlemen, rarely does the temperature go above 32 Celsius here in The Lowlands. So when it does, then you can be assured that the beaches will be full. For me the best time to enjoy our spacious beaches are early in the morning. When the Sun is  warming things up, and still tolerable. Hey, but that's only my modest opinion. Certainly for painting this view, mornings are the best.

The windsurfer

De windsurfer,
oil on canvas - 15 x 30 cm
painted on location - Sat 22 June 2019
SOLD

Sail Schevening is in full swing, on this little painting you see the Minerva sailing out of the harbor entrance and one of the galleons out at Sea. However have a good look and you will notice a faint white strip just in front of the wave breaker , that is the surfboard and sail of the windsurfer! Nice formations of cumulus clouds castings huge shadows on the beach and water, makes for a dramatic composition.

A terras with a view

Een terras met uitzicht
oil on canvas - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Tues. 18 June 2019

SOL

Really, one of the most colourful stretches of beach here in Holland. With that yellow juxtaposing to the blue. the green dunes and red trim on the beach club de Fuute, man those are the primary colours! Then add the elements like wind and light, and you have this delightful scenery. Now one might ask, "How does one catch the wind or the light?".... Physically that would be impossible, but as an image in this case an oil painting on linen, it is possible. With practise, patience and experience, I do it in this way. Not every ones cup of tea, as some like it more abstract, or some like it more messy. I could only do it my way, and thank goodness, there are enough people who appreciate the way I do do it.  Thus, as the Dutch saying goes, I could put bread on the table and wood in the fire.
