Uncle Jans beachcomber's hut

Jutterskeet Ome Jan
oil on linnen - 50 x 60 cm
painted on location -  Tues 29 April 2025

€ 525

I finally got around to making a painting of this most colorful beachcomber's hut located in the dunes  not far from where I usually make my beach paintings. I'm definitely going to be revisiting this location, because hey, who can't use a little color in their lives!

Promises of Spring

Beloften van de Lente, Westduinpark, Den Haag
oil on linen - 90 x 120 cm
painted in studio - Jan 2025

SOLD

Hey, hey, I'm finally happy with the way this scene has worked out on this large format canvas. Working largely from memory, reference photos and paintings already made of simular subject matter, I came to create this painting. Clouds casting shadows on the agitated waters of the North Sea, one should and hopefully feels the cool windy breeze, just by gazing at this painting. On the bottom right  a young flowering bush, showing promises of spring!

Beach Entrance #11, WestduinPark, The Hague

Strandslag 11, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Sat. 15 April and Wed. 19 April 2023

SOLD

Decided to produce a body of work showing the entrances to the beach and beach pavilions of The Hague. Here you see a glimpse of  Zuid, with its two white flags and the Dutch flag. I like how the path splits in two, one leading to te beach and the other up through the dunes heading towards Schevening. The days are getting warmer, and although you don't see much activity, belief me, it was pretty busy.

Entrance to beach #10, Westduinpark

Strandslag 10, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Sat 20 Feb 2021

SOLD

Back at a subject I was painting when I first got started with this project, and that is beach entrances, This time I'm going to be working on larger horizontal formats. Duin grass is still very dry, officially we are still in winter season even though it felt like a spring day. Enjoyed making this rather hazy atmospheric scene with characteristic subdued colors.

Westduinpark, The Hague

pad met uitzicht, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 20 x 30 cm
painted on location - Wed. 5 Feb. 2020

SOLD

When the Sun shines magic in tthe dunes takes place. The dark shadows in contrast with the lightened areas creates all sorts of forms and shapes, a feast for the eyes really. And yeah we outdoor painters love this scenario. It felt fine for me to be on a location where approx. 12 years ago I started working on my ongoing, Wet Paintings from The Lowlands project. I would like to express a special thank you to all the persons that have been following me in these years.

The Lifting of the fog, Westduinpark, The Hague

Kwartelpad, Westduinpark in de mist
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
painted on location - thurs. 5 Dec 2019

SOLD

This must be the 8th or 9th time i make a painting from this location. And after a long wait, I finally got a chance to paint this scene with mist. Characteristic of coastal environments, the mist is a commen occurence.  However to paint it can be difficult, as it is always either coming or going. I found a solution, and it allows me to paint it with accuracy. A close up below for better viewing.

Path to the beach, The Hague

Strandaanslag # 10 - Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 24 x 30 cm
painted on location - Thurs 18 April 2019

SOLD

Here I decided to make a quaint scene of the beach entrance, were I usually go painting. I have taken the liberty to not paint in all the signs and posts, that one encounters at this location. However decided to add the typical so called "Oma fiets" that are very popular in Holland.

The Sea, the sky, and the wind of South Beach, DH

The Gentle rolling wave
oil on canvas - 24 x 30 cm
painted on location - Thurs 4 April 2019
SOLD

Here I set up my easel right up close to the shore line. The colors of the Sea where the main source of inspiration. However just catching the movement of the waters surface turned out to be a rewarding challenge.

View of Scheveningen from Zuiderstrand
oil on canvas - 15 x 30 cm
painted on location - Tues 9 April 2019
SOLD

Still very cold, especially with high wind factor, thus working small. Here the view from in front of the beach paviljoen, De Staat. You can see that the sand of the beach is very messy, after weeks of stormy weather.

Path in the Dunes, WestduinPark, DH
oil on canvas - 30 x 40 cm
painted on location - Thurs 11 April 2019
SOLD

Love these typical Dutch skies, with drifting cumulus clouds. Everything is lit up, except for the  shadows caused by the mass of clouds. I think I will have to revisit this location with a much larger panoramic format canvass.

The Duin pond # 6 & Bicycling near Kijkduin

De duinplas nabij De Savorin Lohmanpad # 6
oil on canvas - 30 x 30 cm
painted on location  -  Wed 20 March 2019

SOLD

Up to now have been painting this scene with the morning Sunlight. Here I was on location late in the afternoon, and on an overcast day, thus no direct Sunlight. I have attempted to evoke moods of peace and tranquillity with this composition. Certainly the mist that was hovering over the trees in the background helped.

Fietsen bij Kijkduin
oil on canvas - 20 x 115 cm
painted on location - Sat 16 Feb. 2019

SOLD

A nice sunny winters day, to be on location. Too windy to be on the beach so I was inspired to capture this scene as the light was just perfect for it. In the distance one can barely see the Pier of Scheveningen, however a little closer and you can see the Harbour entrance with a couple of sailboats heading out.

The Duin pond # 5

De duinplas nabij De Savorin Lohmanpad #5

oil on canvas - 40 x 40 cm
painted on location - Fri 8 March 2019

SOLD

I find this format works well for this subject. Keeping the emphasis on the elegance of the tall trees. Funny how it is that every time i make a painting of this scene, it never is the same twice!

The duin pond 1,2 & 3

De duinplas, nabij De Savorin Lohmanpad #1
oil on canvas - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Fri. 15 Feb. 2019

Reworked please visit posting of 21 May 2021.

Inspired by the composition, yes, but with the sunlight, this view becomes for me, magical! It then transforms into an array of warm tones, it's all about the colours. As subtle as they are they're still there, which for making a painting of this scenery help tremendously.

De duinplas, nabij De Savorin Lohmanpad #2
oil on canvas - 60 x 70 cm
painted on location - Sun. 17 Feb. 2019

SOLD

Here the second result of painting this romantic natural location. Of course as a painter one has the freedom to do what one fancies. Thus an exaggeration on the colour scheme, and then you get something like what I have recorded, with a much vibrant palette. Transforming this scenery in an Expressionist mode, rather than an Impressionist type painting.

De duinplas, nabij De Savorin Lohmanpad #3
oil on canvas - 40 x 40 cm
painted on location - Mon. 18 Feb. 2019

SOLD

Again having fun with the colours here.  Which actually are there to be seen in the bright sunlight, only I amplify them to a much higher level. And why not? I mean this work is meant to be hanging in someones living quarters, not some scientific laboratory where precision is the order of things, so yes I could and take pleasure at making it more pleasing to look at.

The Entrance is free

de toegang is gratis,
oil on canvas - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 31 Jan 2019

SOLD

Here I have decided to revisit a theme that has inspired me for several years now, 'paths to the Sea'. A misty damp winters day, very little wind, thus ideal circumstances to be on location. Sometimes we need a break, time to reflect, to think things over. Well where better place to go than on such a natural solitary beach, were all you are confronted is the Sea, calm and respective of your mood.  You won't be disturbed by crowds of people, only the odd dog with her owner might pass you by.  Plenty of room to move about, both physically and psychologically. All this and more, and the entrance is for free!

Misty path to the Sea

Pad naar Zee met Mist
oil on canvas - 30 x 50 cm
painted on location - Wed 28 Dec. 2016

SOLD

I was on my way to the beach to make another wave painting, when this scenario was just too difficult to resist painting. Even though I've painted this view many times, this is the first one with a mysterious atmosphere. Upon finishing the painting I felt it needed something to make it somewhat interesting..luckily there happened to pass by this man with his dog, thus that was the finishing touch. Here a picture of me just getting started on this painting.

On the Path 8 & 9

Op Pad 8 - Zusters met de Jackie
                                                                         oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Mon 7 March 2016
                                                                                         NTK.

Op Pad 9 - Morning has broken (to quote Cat Stevens)
Oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Tues 8 March 2016
SOLD

The same location 9 times, every painting a little different. I will stop for now, and most likely re-visit this theme in the middle of spring. Sometimes just the silence of this Nature reserve to have for yourself is more than enough, thus have not always painted people in them. The light is never quite the same thus every work is unique and since they were freely painted the elements in the composition vary slightly.

On the Path 5/6/7

The Encounter (de ontmoeting)
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm (7 x 9.5")
painted on location - Mon 29 Feb 2016
SOLD

On the path, encounters are made. Why, even life long friendships can find their births. In this little scene, you get the feeling that something is going to develop between these two!

Afternoon ride,  (Middag rid), Westduinpark
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm (7 x 9.5")
painted on location and studio -  Wed 2 March 2016
SOLD

Inspired by the Haagse School painter Anton Mauve's Moring ride on the beach. I decided to add these riders on this painting. Normally you would not see riders on this path, as there are special designated trails for horse riders in these dunes. Hey, but as an artist I am free to express and make up stories in my own creations. Thus this work was born.

The flight of two seagulls and the Rabbit chase.
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm ( 7 x 9.5")
painted on location - Thurs 3 March 2016
SOLD

Sometimes as the saying goes, "less is more". Thus in this painting I decided to keep it simple and put the focus on a few heavenly creatures, that inhabit these dunes. And I did my best to show detail of the flora and fauna in Westduinpark.

On the Path - 3 & 4

Op Pad # 3 - The conversation (het gesprek)
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm (7"x 9.5")
painted on location - Mon. 22 Feb 2016
SOLD

Op Pad # 4 - Mother and daughter
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm (7"x 9.5")
painted on location - Wed 24 Feb 2016
SOLD

Same size as the first two, same location, same fence poles, same trees and bushes, same dunes. Different people, different sky, different light, different coloration, different themes.  That's what is going to make this an intriguing series. At least that is my aim, to make it interesting. And of course to touch you the viewer in a way that words fail to do so. Hope you to are also enjoying the developments of these little oil paintings.

In case your not Dutch, this one is simply called, the hug. A lot of things happen when one is on the path. One sees much. One experiences much. Why one even feels much.  I think I'm gonna like this series. Staring with this location, will get out there often and every painting will have a different story to tell.  For me this location is full of beauty. Maybe it is the path fading away in a downward curve to an unseen vista. Or perhaps the tonal range of the colors present in the dunes this time of the year. Not really sure and quite frankly, I don't even care. I just know that something summoned my attention and being myself on the path,  I was compelled stop at this very spot,  in the Westduinpark, The Hague, and put my craft to practice.

Indian Summer on the beach

Moeder en kind naar strand bij "Zuid" (Nieuwe versie)
oil on canvas - 40 x 80 cm
painted on location - Tues 9 Sept 2014 (re-worked in studio 3 Sept 2015)
SOLD

Almost exactly a year later I decided to re fresh this warm beach entrance scene. It is the start of a warm Indian Summers day. This Mom is treating her daughter to a day of fun at the cool waters edge, were indeed most Haagenaar folk like to go when it gets up in the mid 20's celsius. One of the hot spots for the young crowd, this beach house is simply called Zuid, which means South.

The painting here under is MUCH, MUCH bigger than the above work, just this weblog formatting does not give that appearance.

Wijds gezicht op Zuiderstrand bij ochtend licht,
oil on canvas - 70 x 140 cm (let op!)
painted on location - Wed 9 & Thurs 10 Sept. 2015
SOLD

I waited patiently for almost 2 weeks for some good sunny weather to make this and 3 other paintings in the past 3 days. A scene I never get tired of painting, and now working this size, on location, really gets my inspiration juices flowing. Can't wait to exhibit this on my next art market, just to hear the reactions from the on lookers.

Path in the dunes, DH

Pad in de duinen, DH
oil on canvas - 20 x 50 cm
painted on location - Sat 18 April 2015
SOLD

It is late in the afternoon, I went down to the beach, looking for inspiration. Nothing going on there but a wind strong enough to blow all my gear to Rotterdam. The kite surfers were having a great time, but that was the extent of it. Discouraged, I turned around and headed back to my auto. Luckily I stopped for a drink of water at the fountain just 5 meters behind the location were this painting was made. I saw the light bouncing off the sea, and thought to myself, "wouldn't it be fine if I could somehow show that on a oil painting." Well that was enough to get me started. To show light one must surround the area in darkness, thus on that premise, this work started taking shape. I'm positive Monet would have done a much better rendition of this scene. But, for better or for worse, this was the result of my modest effort. I have done this scene before, over the years, and am glad to admit it never tires me, as this is such a beautiful location, especially now with the new growth. On the horizon to the left a hint of the Atlantic Hotel, Kijkduin.
