Yes, fun for everyone, including dogs! In this heat wave we are having, where better to be than on a breezy beach, with cool temperature water to dip into. Keeping the composition simple and harmonious is my task at hand.

Commission / Opdracht

I was very happy to get this commission as I love getting out to the beach and working on this subject. Always a challenge to paint on such a large format on location at the beach, however it was possible and what was not possible I made up for it in the studio. Paying customer was happy, person getting the painting as a special gift was happy, and I was happy. What more can a working artist ask for?

Here you have the latest painting of this subject which i have been tackling for years now. Believe me it is a struggle to get in all those details, on such a massive size canvas and especially that I make it on location! Thus the elements of the outdoors are either for me or against me. Usually I choose to be on location when they are working for me, (I have no choice really). I'm standing on a wide open space, a pier made of huge cement elements topped with a road wide enough, for emergency vehicles to travel on.   

I enjoyed every minute of the making of this painting. Meeting all kinds of friendly nice people, who made several enquiries as to the technique and equipment I use.  I was getting a lot of compliments, thus I knew then that I was on to something good.  For your viewing pleasure 3 close ups.

Back in The Hague, the weatherman was gifting us all with freezing temperatures. You might ask, a gift what the hell is he talking about? well here in The Lowlands, believe it or not, snow is always welcome! you see we get so little of it, sometimes it takes a few years before it comes back.... Thus,  more fun in the snow for everyone, but especially for the little ones! Snowboarding, tobogganing, slipping and sliding, whatever it takes to get you down the slope! I enjoyed very much capturing the sense of movement these children were displaying.

Yes indeed fun on the snow, for many, many kids in these days here in The Lowlands! I was visiting with my partner Wilma in Gelderland, close to the German boarder. Man did we get a dumping of that fluffy white stuff. Of course I was definitely prepared to tackle the situation, as the weatherman was getting us all excited about the coming winter storm. And what a storm it was! Cold, B-r-r-r-r-rrrr. he's a picture to proof it.

Seeing these paintings being created I having decided to make this into a series. I will most likely make a few more before this season is over. A safe place for parents to play with or let their kids find like minded kids in which to have a fun time at the beach. No life threatening under currents to worry about, which at this beach is really a concern! Unfortuneately the Life Rescue Birgade (reddingsbrigade) has their work cut out for them in these days. This subject seems to be developing into a series. I love the fun aspect of this subject. Kids having the time of their lifes. They feel safe, Mom or Dad is always nearby, and they make friendss instantly. Often they come and ask what am I doing. Or one of the parents or gaurdians bring a child nearby to have a look and explain what I am doing. Furthermore in thesse troubling times I feel this is an image that can bring delight and happiness intoyour household

This is a classic view which I paint often. However every painting tellss a different story. Here it was early evening, as you can see space calor is to be found at this location. I was inspired to paint in those friends kicking a soccer ball, I liked the uniformity of their attire, and will it was jusst the right spice to give this view that special flavour.

I was invited to show my paintings at a small market on the terras, and decided to make this painting of such a unique situation!  This painting was literally sold shortly after completion, thus decided to make the image available as a print on canvas.

On a very hot sunny day I decided to make this fun series of paintings at the beach. Usually am working very large scale and bringing the big picture of the beach with the figures occupying not so much space. Here the figures are central, thus the focal point.

Thank God Leo the owner of the beach cafe De Fuut, keeps refreshing every year that warm cadmium yellow paint characteristic of his cafe.  I always get a kick from painting those Strandbeesten from Theo Janssen!

Not normal high temperature on this day, kids just loving being at the beach, as the waves were mild and plenty of safe water to play on. The two girls in the foreground, getting a taste of surfing with a toy surf board, that one has to pull, while the other takes a ride.

Two days later and hey what happened to the blistering warm temperatures?.... Will just look at the sky of the above two paintings....wind blasted that warmth straight across Holland, over Germany and Switzerland, and I swear, must have made it clear over the Alps all the way to steaming hot Sicily, SO HARD WAS THE WIND BLOWING THAT DAY! Oh well, great subject matter to paint, those infamous Dutch clouds have made history repeatedly with the Masters of the Golden Age and even more recently right up to the 21century.

Just a lovely day here at Zuiderstrand, The Hague. The warm light of the late afternoon brings life to this scene...kite surfers making the most of the windy situation. Decided to use a portrait size canvas, thus showing the action on the ground and in the air!

Arriving on the scene, sometimes it is difficult making a final decision on what will get painted. After a drink of coffee, I take into consideration the various options, then a choice is made and the painting gets started. I guess the wave action got me going on the work above.

It's time to pack up and head home, but little Jaap is only interested in taking another dip in the fresh cool water of the North Sea, his mother doesn't agree and hastily chases him.  Finding myself on location, on South Beach, The Hague, at the beginning of the famous golden hour, (the time when the Sun is low enough to cast a warm light, ideal for painting),  I was witness to this situation. Luckily I was almost finished this painting, just it needed something extra, thus as quick as possible I painted the Mom chasing her boy, and am glad I did it quickly, as it seems to have captured the situation perfectly.

First time for il pittore on the small island Vlieland,  really loved it their! I'm no stranger to small islands, have spent many warm days, working and painting on the tiny island Panarea, off the coast of Sicily,  a real jewel of the Mediterranean Sea. But Vlieland is on the North Sea, and to experience it with extreme warm weather is truly a blessing! I made a total of 5 paintings, next posting will show the other 2.  This theme of children at the beach is attractive to me at this time, hope you are not getting bored with these postings. Here you have a few other paintings I made at the Art Festival Ezels en Kwasten in  Wijk Aan Zee, NH. It was probably the 1st real hot summer like day we have had here in Holland. The beach's were full of Moms with their kids. I had just finished 2 large panoramic format canvases thus decided it was time for a few close ups of beach activity. With that thought in mind, that is how these works came to life. Didn't get on location tell about mid afternoon, however worked right up until dusk, as is evident on the third painting. Had fun composing this series as I had a surplus of models to work from, and the best part of that is, I didn't have to pay them!

It doesn't get any better than this, on our sacred coastline here in The Lowlands. These mothers with their children are playing it smart and coming to the beach nice and early, as later on in the day the Sun beams are full strength and can actually get uncomfortable, for the sensitive fair skinned people. A real pleasure for me to be on location, and finally I got to use my 3m parasol to prtoctect me from the Sun and not the wind.

A big painting for a big beach. The skies are actually very dramatic and luscious at this time of year, check out the painting below. However easy it looks, belief you me, it is not easy to paint a convincing sky. I manage to do it, because of all the practice I've had over the years, but still it remains a challenge. Please have a good look at this painting, check out those 3 young boys kicking the football, on the left. Years of model drawing and painting have given me the confidence to apply those strokes, which convey the message with as little description as possible.

The ferris wheel, has been added to liven up things at the Pier which dominates the beach here in Scheveningen. It is a big winner with the young crowd. For me it gives me the chance to paint yet another detail, which i must admit is fun to do. I like the fact that they painted the supporting cement pillars of the Pier in soft pastel colors......This is the view one gets after leaving Zwarte Pad and heads in the direction of Wassenaarseslag.

I made this painting as a study for a larger commission. Often these smaller works have a more accurate rendition of the situation at hand, as it is more likely to be completed in one sitting. The evening light brings on soft warm tones casting a golden hue on the sand and in general warm tones overall.

It is the start of a nice summers day. We here in The Lowlands are really enjoying this time of the year, as summer has finally made its appearance.  Kids are out of school, families are packing up their gear, to get ready for a holiday. Most people are heading to a country on the Mediterranean. However for us that have stayed behind, a little trip to the coast is all it takes to have a relaxed and fun time. Plenty of space is guaranteed, and the usually ice cold water has warmed up a few notches, making it somewhat tolerable.
