South Beach, The Hague with highwind

 Zuiderstrand met hoge wind
oil on canvas - 15 x 30 cm
painted on location - Fri 12 April 2024

SOLD

I had to find a spot out of the wind to make this little painting on location. Those kite surfers are having a blast, as the wind was thrusting them about just enough to make it worth their effort to be on the water. Still early in the season, thus the beach seems rather empty, however nice to sit in the warm strand pavilions and take in the view.

Kites, surfers and clouds at South Beach, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location -  25 July 2023

SOLD

These paintings were made in the same week, thus decided to post them together. Lovely clouds worthy of painting, thus that is probably the reason I was out there! I always like to include a bit of beach life on these scenes, not too much mind you, as it gives the viewer an indication of the season.

A Winter's Seascape #5

Scheveningen op Winters dag met surfers
oil on canvas - 25 x 100cm
painted on location -  Wed 02 Feb 2022

€975

What a unique situation to paint. In all my years working on location, I have never seen such a thick mist covering almost the entirety of that massive Pier, and as you can see the Northly part of the Boulevard. Waves were still crashing on the shore from the aftermath of days of heavy winds and rain. What made it advantages for me to paint, was the wind factor was pretty well non-existent.  As you can see a favorite location for surfers. A passerby generously shared this picture she made of me while working, I felt it had captured the situation I just described so here you can have a look for yourself.

Winter fun, Schevening beach with airplane

 Winterpret, strand Scheveningen met vliegtuig,
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted on location - 29 Jan 2021, reworked in atelier 17 April 2021

SOLD

Here I am reposting a painting I made on location at the end of January.  The reason is that that Dornier Do-228-212, flown by The Netherlands Coast Guard, was added.  As I mentioned prior,  I'm not too often on this beach, mainly to avoid the large crowds, however winter season is never really that busy, thus quite manageable.  Further developing this new theme of kite surfers I had more than enough models to work from. The sky was dramatic, the wind was strong and the waves were rolling endlessly with a loud roar!  Here below a close up of the airplane.

The Cumulus shuffle above South Beach

De Stapelwolk shuffle boven Zuiderstrand. DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 80 cm - 15 x 31 inches
painted on location -  Thurs 9 June 2016
SOLD

Yes ladies and gentle, not the Harlem Shuffle by Bob & Earl 1963, (made popular by the Rolling Stones cover), but the Cumulus shuffle, as these warm fluffy clouds dance across the sky on a lovely sunny morning here at South Beach, The Hague. This view dominated by warm tones, buildings catching the suns warm rays, just a pleasure to be able to bring to you the viewer this special moment.

At the Beach Series #11-2013, with Kite surfer

3 Kindren met Kite surfer, Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas, 50 x 50 cm
painted on location - Tues. 9 July 2013
SOLD

Made this painting just before AtBS#12, on the sane afternoon. As you can see the hot summer temperatures were still not with us, as the wind was still blowin' hard. However it didn't stop these kids from having a blast at the waters edge, as they were enjoying jumping about at the incoming waves. The little sister looks on and keeps guard of the soccer ball. In the distance a kite surfer blasting through the waves, man do those guys move fast!

Racing Clouds/Crashing Waves #5
oil/sand on canvas, 35 x 25 cm
painted on location - Fri 22 June 2012
SOLD

This one was actually swallowed up by a crashing wave, pulled it just in time, and myself(up to my thighs) and some of my gear, totally drenched!

 Racing Clouds/Crashing Waves #4
oil/sand on canvas, 35 x 25 cm
painted on location _ Fri 22 June 2012

SOLD,   private collection, Den Haag

This work features a burst of rain cushing down from that dark grey cloud. Within a few minutes that water was pouring over me, took the painting and myself under the protection of my Yellow Parasol! A windsurf kite in the distance, and another surfer closer to me, thinking it over, or at least getting a feel for the force of the waves!

Racing Clouds/Crashing Waves #3
oil/sand on canvas, 35 x 25 cm
painted on location - Fri 22 June 2012

SOLD  private collection - Noordwijk

Funky sky on this one! Was about to correct color, but thought, although unreal,..... it made for an interesting image. All these works and the 50 x 100 cm of my last posting all painted behind that yellow parasol (picture below)

me working on #5, in about 45 minutes the water has reached my position....the end of that parasol was near. (painter behind me is Hans Versfelt, Roos Schuring was set up next to him, but she was busy taking this picture!)

Beach scene with Kite Surfers

Strandgezicht met 'Kite surfers', Noordwijk
oil on canvas
50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Fri 24 June 2011  -  SOLD

Just back from a week painting on location, in Noordwijk Aan Zee, as a participant of the Schildersfestival, (painters festival). This is one of 21 paintings that I made in 7 days! Fortunately, I managed to sell 19 of them! They ranged in size from 10 x 15 cm up to 60 x 120 cm. We had very high winds for six days in a row! Believe me after a while your ears start ringing, and fine sand particals seem to like finding locations on your body to take refuge form the tormenting force of the swift flowing air! This work was created next to my own 3 meter parasol which I layed on the sand and attached to a pole. Thus barracading the easel and myself from the wind and rain!
