Invitation to fun and adventure by Zuid beach cafe

Uitnoding voor plezier en avontuur bij ZUID #3
oil on linen - 60 x 80 cm
painted on location - Sat 17 May 2025

SOLD

For me this is the most picturesque entrance on this stretch of beach. Thus it is no wonder that I go time and again to this location.  I like that one sees a section of the cafe, complete with flags, the childrens playground, pastel colored parasols and that colorful sign of the name of this cafe, Zuid (which in English translates to South).  The cloudy and windy conditions gives birth to an overall earthy tone to the Sea which is in harmony with the grass covered dunes.

Uitnoding voor plezier en avontuur bij ZUID #2
oil on linnen - 30 x 40 cm
painted on location - Tues 06 May 2025

€ 475

The second attempt at this scene, a smaller size this time. Again the weather conditions create all those juicy earth tone colors in the Sea. I rather enjoyed painting that cloud covered sky with all those variations of warm greys. The colorful objects attached to the beach cafe create a breath of freshness which is pleasing to the eye.

Uitnoding voor plezier en avontuur bij ZUID #1
oil on linnen - 50 x 60 cm
painted on location - Sat 19 April 2025

€ 745

Here you have the first attempt of this scene from this series in the year 2025.  The sky as you can see clearly defines the coloration of the Sea. Due to the sunny conditions, it was a little busier at the beach, thus the bicycles and that car which belongs to the beach cafe.

A warm summer memory, on South Beach

een warme zomerherinnering op Zuiderstrand , DH
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - 6 Aug 2022 / reworked in studio Jan 2024

SOLD

Although I prefer to work on location in front of the subject matter, occasionally I alter paintings made aux plein air in the studio. It's fun to do, because one has to use stretch ones imagination, and often invent things that may or may have not been at the original location. I have also published the 1st version of this painting at the bottom of the text, thus one can in comparing the two, for better or for worse, see the changes made. Naturally, one hopes for the better!

The sitting Sun over the quite beach

Zonondergang over de stillestrand,
oil on canvas - 50 x 100cm
painted on location - 28 Aug 2023
SOLD

Ir's amazing what one actually sees when one takes the time to really observe the North Sea.  The colors in the sky, the reflections on the water, and the hovering clouds. Summer is coming to an end, this shows up in my painting by the ever present spectacular cloud formations. Which was indeed my inspiration for creating this painting. Everything changes so fast at this time of the evening, there really is no time to waste, and working from memory is necessary.

de zee eindelijk vrijheid en ruimte, #1
The rolling wave
oil on canvas - 20 x 140 cm
painted on location - 26 April 2023
€ 975

I decided to embark on this subject and format once again, after several years of not working on this subject/format. Characterized by a high horizon line, and the waves breaking at the foreground. I will be making  paintings of this view, of course all of them will be different, as that is also a quality of the Sea, never the same view twice. Could be simular, but never the exact view twice!

Sailing on The North Sea

Zeilen op de Noordzee
oil on canvas - 18 x 115 cm

I decided to freshen up, in the studio, a painting I made on location in Aug 2018. Am much happier with the outcome of the changes. Hopefully now it will attract a potential buyer.

Beach entrance #9, South beach, The Hague 1 & 2

Strandslag #9, Zuiderstrand, DH #1
oil on linnen - 40 x 100 cm
painted on location - Fri 22 July 2022

SOLD
private collection Madrid, Spain

In this painting I strived to bring the message of a not so tame North Sea view from the Westduinpark are of The Hague. Wind is emphasised, even though it is a lovely sunny scenery. I was asked to make this painting by a Spanish family that was moving back to Spain after having spent a few years in Holland.

Strandslag #9, Zuiderstrand, DH #2
oil on linnen - 50 x 120 cm
painted on location - Fri 5 Aug 2022

SOLD

I enjoyed making the above painting so much that I decided to make yet another version of this scene. Thus I headed out about a week later and managed to knock off this painting in two settings. Although it is the same view you should be able to notice several differences, most notably the direction of the wind as indicated in the flag!

The gentle wave of the North Sea.

Het zachte golf van de Noord Zee,
oil on linen -  60 x 120 cm
painted on location - Sat. 14 May 2022

SOLD

Often when I get to the beach and don't get inspired immediately, for a subject to paint. I often just go to the waters edge and meditate on the waves and the  grandeur of the sea. Then if something strikes me about what I'm looking at, then the creative juices begin to flow. Such was the case with this painting. Things just pulled together, the clouds, the colors of the water, and most importantly, in this case the beauty of the gentle rolling waves.

A Winter's Seascape #3

Winters Zeegezicht #3
oil on canvas - 25 x 100 cm
painted on location - Tues  18 Jan 2022

SOLD

On this cold misty morning, I was inspired by a scene so full of tranquility that just by looking at it, I felt a calmness, whilst listening to the whispering gentle waves rolling in, I was transfixed and summoned to paint it. What you see above is how I represented it in oils on canvas. While mixing the colors on my palette, the odd cry of seagulls wisping by would catch my attention.  What lies beyond all that visible mist is an immensity so vast and grand, I leave it to your imagination to fill.

Winters Seascapes

Winters Zeegezicht 1
oil on canvas - 25 x 100 cm
painted on location - Tues 21 Dec. 2021

SOLD

Having been absent from on location painting for just over two months I finally decided to pack my gear and force myself to head out of the studio, to do some on location painting.  Went to my favorite destination,  Zuiderstrand, the beach of the city I live in.  A nice comfortable half hour walk through the dunes of the nature reserve Westduinpark, brings me to the beach.  Fortunately for me the weather, even though it was extremely cold,  was to my favor, sunny and most importantly no wind to speak about.  The light this time of the year remains pleasant for us plein air painters for the most of the day as the Sun doesn't reach it's high zenith as it would in the summer.  From on high in the dunes I observed that the gentle waves where rhythmically  caressing the shoreline.  But what really got my attention was the intensity of warm white tones of the rolling waves, as the angle of the sunlight on them was perfect.   A point I would like to make, that you might find interesting, is that I was faced with the problem, how am I going to paint the color intensity of the water and waves on my canvas. Thus the first thing I did was cover the whole surface of the canvas with the darkest color I could create, a mixture of Indigo Blue and dark red did the job. After approximately 2.5 hrs. what you see above was the result of my creative efforts.

Schevening Beach Scene & Zuiderstrand beach scene

Noorderstrand, Schevening
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Sat 29 May 2021

SOLD

Here a typical view of Schevening from just past the ZwartePad beach entrance.  An area frequented by nudist sun bathers, as this is far away from the huge crowds in Schevening.

Cats ready, Zuiderstrand DH,
oil on board - 16 x 24 cm
painted on location - Sun 30 May 2021

SOLD

Just a quick oil study of a typical scene on Zuiderstrand, The beach of The Hague. On the horizon you can see elements of Schevening beach.

Strong winds, South Beach, DH

Harde wind, Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - wed. May 26 2021

SOLD

Four strong winds, it's the title of a famous Canadian song written by Ian and Sylvia Tyson, probably made famous by the cover of Neil Young. I guess due to the circumstances present while I made this work I had to think of that tune. Anyway thanks to the help of my by now famous, 3M parasol it was possible to knock of this painting. Love these typical Dutch skies, which usher in the renowned Dutch Light.

The Homecoming

De Tuiskomst
oil o canvas - 20 x 30 cm
painted on location - Tues 11 May 2021

SOLD

Nothing like entering the safety of a harbor after you sail your vessel through a stormy Sea. Here I have tried to convey this feeling by showing the storm clearing up. Vessel is leaving the dark sea behind and entering onto the still vibrant colored Sea.

Sailing the North Sea

Zeilen op de Noordzee,
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted on location - Sun 18 April 2021

SOLD

For a sailor, when sailing, all that matters is the sea and the sky, the land doesn't concern him. Thus I dedicated this painting to only the sea and the sky. Enough going on in that sky to keep any painter busy for hours, at least. An ideal day to be sailing, plenty of wind and plenty of Sun. If you look closely you will see many variations of green on the water, the sun light determines what color the water will be, clouds of course have an influence as well.

South Beach, The Hague #4 & #5

Children on the beach playing with pet dog
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Sat 27 Feb 2021

SOLD

One of the most popular places for children to be, on the beach! And of course the family pet dog loves to be their with them. The sky was clearing, however I loved the tones on the dunes and sand this overcast sky made, thus that was the theme I brought over. To give the viewer a focus point, the playful  scene was added.

Windy and sunny winter beach scene
oil on board - 30 x 40 cm
painted on location - Sat 27 Feb 2021

SOLD

This painting was made right after I finished the above piece. As you see the sky opened up and light flooded in, creating a whole different scenario. You might also notice the high tide, resulting in a narrower beach. Added in the 3 seagulls that where dancing to the melody of the southwest wind.

South Beach, The Hague #3 - 2021

 Zuiderstrand, Den Haag #3 - 2021
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 25 Feb 2021

SOLD

Early morning view of this beautiful piece of Holland. Winter skies are dramatic and always a challenge to paint. As usual, with these wide panoramic views I purposefully don't paint in too many people. The few that I do add are usually far off, which helps me bring over a since of depth.  One of the reasons that I like to make these paintings is to offer to the eventual owner of these paintings a sense of space and openness. In a small country as Netherlands this can be, and usually is,  much appreciated.

Girl with red coat and her dog

Meisje met rode jas en haar hond,
oil on board - 30 x 40 cm (12 x 16 ")
painted on location - Thurs 4 Feb 2021

Sold

Always fine for me to paint this view of The Hague's beach. I'm up a little high from the ground level, on the South wall of the entrance to Schevenings  harbor. Nice play of light going on here. The Sun coming and going with the movement of the clouds. Still some pretty wild wave activity shown, as we has tempestuous weather prior to this day.

Opening up of the sky.

de hemel gaat open,
oil on canvas - 30 x 40 cm
painted on location - Jan 21 202

SOLD

It is not too often that one see's a rainbow at the North Sea, but they occur regularly enough. Determined to make a painting at the beach I headed out. Fortunately the sky was clearing up and by the time i got set up I was afforded this spectacular view.  From somewhere in between Kijkduin and the Zandmotor, this painting was made. If you look closely you will see the enormous ferris wheel at the peer of Schevening

SOLD

(Continued from the title)  ...... From the darkness, to the light."

Strange but that song kept playing in my head whilst I was make these two quick oil sketches. For me no better way to start the year than to be doing my thing at my favorite beach. While most people were stripping off their warm clothing and taking the tradition dip in the frigidly cold clashing waves, il pittore was just a few meters away capturing the beauty of the opening sky, with the swift movement of the cloud formations.  Luckily the rain had just passed by, thus my timing was good, sit myself up and knocked off these two medium sized paintings simultaneously.

Zuiderstrand commision painting

 Study for Zuiderstrand commision painting
oil on canvas - 20 x 60 cm
painted on location - Tues 07 July 2020

SOLD

As this was the first time I make a painting of this view I decided a study would be a good idea. Thus a week before I made that larger painting below I made this smaller study to familiarise myself with this view. This helps me in making decisions about the final composition

View of Kijkduin and Zandmotor commision.
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
painted on location - Tuesday 21 July 2020

SOLD

Here is the final version of this commision scene. It is what the customer wanted, thick Dutch clouds sweeping across the sky, the dunes, a summery feeling. I had to wait for the right conditions, was lucky for me that this took place just a couple of days ago. Again here in this sceen I have omitted a very large new construction area, which is what the customer desired, and I must admit I would have left that elephant of a building which would have appeared just above the white roof of the 1st beach pavilion on the left side
