Catamaran Club House, The Hague

HKZV clubhouse, Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas - 60 x 60 cm
painted on location - 31 Aug 2022

 SOLD

I'm so glad to have this object to paint at the beach. Love the color of the clubhouse, as it is complementary to the yellow of the sand. I wonder if they actually thought of that when they decided to make it that color?

The Hague Sailing Club

HKZV, Den Haag
oil on canvas - 60 x 90 cm
painted on location - Thurs 29 July 2021

SOLD

A portrait of this sailing clubhouse for me is always fun to do. I love that color, Ultramarine (blue), especially when the Sun is hitting it, shadows get cast from the roof and open spaces. Then in combination with the surrounding colors, the yellow of the beach club house behind it, the various colors of the 'cats', just in general a colorful scenery, wouldn't you agree.

Baby, the fog must lift...

Schat, de mist moet optrekken,
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs 10 June 2021

€ 1250

On one of my latest painting excursions to South beach, The Hague, wasn't much happening, just usual  sunlight, was contemplating packing up, but something, a feeling said to me, just wait. Close your eyes meditate a bit and wait. Well that voice served me well! In came this thick fog, rolling up from the sea and totally filled the atmosphere with mystery  and intrigue. Now that was worth painting. Quickly as possible set my gear up and within minutes was laying the paint on to create this scene. I imagine the sailors ready to sail out in their cats, possibly one of them was on his mobile talking to his wife, saying "Schat, de mist moet eerst optrekken"..

Strong winds, South Beach, DH

Harde wind, Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location - wed. May 26 2021

SOLD

Four strong winds, it's the title of a famous Canadian song written by Ian and Sylvia Tyson, probably made famous by the cover of Neil Young. I guess due to the circumstances present while I made this work I had to think of that tune. Anyway thanks to the help of my by now famous, 3M parasol it was possible to knock of this painting. Love these typical Dutch skies, which usher in the renowned Dutch Light.

Longing for The Warm Summer

ZIN IN ZOMMER,
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
Painted on location - 01 April 2021 (finished in atelier 14 April 2021)

SOLD

It is early on a lovely sunny day, I found myself at my beloved location,  and decided to capture again as I have already on many occasions, this picturesque view of our beach in The Hague. You don't see it on the painting but it is still quite cold and together with the wind it feels still rather chilly, thus the title, longing for the warm summer.  to bring across that feeling of warmth, I placed three young ladies running to dip and refresh themselves in the cool water of The North Sea.

Parents and their children at the beach #5

Ouders en hun kinderen op het strand #5
oil on linnen - 50 x 175 cm
painted on location - Tues 11 Aug 2020

SOLD

The largest of this series was made on a really hot summers day, was off to an early start, thus most of the work was done, with comfortable temperature. I had to make use of the 3M parasol which I have ready for me at the strandpavilijoen De Staat, otherwise I would have melted in the heat! There is alot going on in this work, but not too much. I left out at least 70% of the crowds sunbathing or otherwise enjoying the fresh Sea water that afternoon. It was soo hot, i also felt compelled to take a dip in the Sea on a few occasions, with my shirt and shorts on.

Parents and their children at the beach #2

Ouders en hun kindren op het strand #2
oil on canvas - 30 x 170 cm
painted on location - Wed 24 June 2020

SOLD

On a tropical hot day, very rare here in Holland, i was crazy enough to go make this painting on location. However I enjoyed all the people I ended up using as models to creat this scene. For children, having the time of their lives. Playing in that very shallow water at the beach.

Two details f9r better viewing.

Hommage to South Beach, The Hague

Oude aan Zuiderstrand, Den Haag #1

painted on location - 19 June 2020

SOLD

Start of a lovely day, gonig to be a little more busy than what you see in this painting, but not to worry, as this beach is so wide one never feels claustrophobic. As a matter of fact, good thing I adapted using this format fr that works best with these beaches.  Here below 2 details.

HKZV 2 times

HKZV clubhouse, Den Haag
oil on canvas - 18 x 24 cm
painted on location - Sat 17 Aug 2019
SOL

Just a little painting, but what a big view! The high winds recently have been blowing sand more and more to the edge of Westduinpark, creating this situation which I find absolutely fantastic to paint. the slopes gently roll down and eventually flatten out and join the waters crust of the North Sea. As is evident in the painting below.

Erg winderig Zuiderstand op een zomersdag
oil on canvas - 50 x 100 cm
painted on location - Mon 19 Aug 2019

SOL

Without my 3 meter parasol laying on its side protecting me and my gear from the wind this painting would not have been possible to create. A small sacrifice for me, but oh look at those cloud formations, what a joy yet at the same time a challenge to get down with paint on a canvas. A lot is going on in this scene, s worth taking your time to have a closer look.

Life at the quiet beach, The Hague, Holland

De Supper of ingang bij DeKwartel
oil on linen - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Wed 04 July 2018

A friendly and inviting summer scene, here at the Quiet beach in The Hague. Keeping busy by beach paviljion De Kwartel, were almost two decades ago I started painting on location. Then it had much more of a bohemian atmosphere, and Ed would kindly offer me an espresso, now and then.

Summer impressions at the beach 1

Zuiderstrand s avonds vanaf De Kwartel
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
painted on location -  Wed 30 May 2018
SOLD

I can never get tired of this view, especially around this time of the day. Thank God Leo the owner of the beach cafe De Fuut, keeps refreshing every year that warm cadmium yellow paint characteristic of his cafe.  I always get a kick from painting those Strandbeesten from Theo Janssen!

Morning light on South Beach

Zuiderstrand met achtend lucht
oil on canvas - 40 x 80 cm
painted on location - Sunday 22 April 2018

THIS WORK HAS BEEN PAINTED OVER, THUS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

Here you have the first summer like image of the beach I usually paint at for the new 2018 season. The catamarans are just arriving in a week it will look much busier with all them in place.  A nice day to be on location, as we are enjoying unusual warm temperatures for this time of the year. Here below you see me working on the painting.

Autumn skies over South Beach.

Zuiderstrand met Herfsthemel
oil on canvas - 40 x 40 cm
painted on location - Tues 12 Sept 2017

SOLD

With such a display of those puffy cumulus clouds mixed with a stratocumulus making an appearance here and there, it was no wonder I choose this format to paint on, thus not horizontal, but vertical. Low horizon, putting the focus on what's going taking place in the air.  We have been experiencing strong wind forces on the coast, as you can see by the build up of sand next to the dunes. That object you see on the sand next to that isolated dark pole, slightly right of center, is a Strandbeest, in progress by Theo Janssen. Below a close up, have a look.

The Beautiful Quiet Beach, DH

The Race is on, (In The Sky)
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm - (16 x 47 inches)
painted on location - Sunday 20 August 2017
SOLD

For the more adventurous, a very windy/mild storm situation, depicted in this scenery.  The effects of light, due to the presence of those lovely fluffy clouds, racing by,  in my opinion, make this an interesting view. A sailor with his Cat, getting ready to tackle the elements, kite surfers and Nature lovers alike, enjoying this afternoon, on the not so Quiet Beach here at Zuiderstrand, DH.

Warmth of Indian Summer days II, South Beach, DH

A hot moment at HKZV, Zuiderstrand DH
oil on canvas - 60 x 90 cm
painted on location - 14 Sept 2016
SOLD

This is no doubt one of the best paintings I made in 2016.  Depicted is the recently renovated Catamaran club house of The Hague.  I think the position of the primary colored objects at the end of the row of catamarans, ads a certain attraction to this piece. The soft atmospheric condition caused by the extreme heat of the Indian summer temperature has helped in creating a feeling of tranquility to the scene. I'm glad I decided to get out on location, on this dayof September 2016.  Sometimes for a painter, it pays to get out there early and catch the shadows, which usually add in the composition of the work at hand.

Warmth of Indian Summer days I, South Beach, DH

Genieten van de Indian summers weer I
oil on canvas - 20 x 140 cm
painted on location - 13 Sept 2016
SOLD

The Indian summer has been with us for a long stay this year, and most Dutch people are very content with this decision of Mother Nature. I have been able to get on location on a few of these days, and bring to you a the warm moments, to enjoy any time of the year. This format seems to be custom made  for our beach here on the coast of The Lowlands. Below a detail of the above painting, showing a sunbather taking in all those nurturing Sun rays.

Summer scenes of South Beach

Gezicht op Scheveningense pier
oil on canvas - 20 x 50 cm
painted on location -  6 July 2016
SOLD

I made this painting as a study for a larger commission. Often these smaller works have a more accurate rendition of the situation at hand, as it is more likely to be completed in one sitting. The evening light brings on soft warm tones casting a golden hue on the sand and in general warm tones overall.

S'ochtends op Zuiderstrand,
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted on location - 13 July 2016
SOLD

It is the start of a nice summers day. We here in The Lowlands are really enjoying this time of the year, as summer has finally made its appearance.  Kids are out of school, families are packing up their gear, to get ready for a holiday. Most people are heading to a country on the Mediterranean. However for us that have stayed behind, a little trip to the coast is all it takes to have a relaxed and fun time. Plenty of space is guaranteed, and the usually ice cold water has warmed up a few notches, making it somewhat tolerable.

The Cumulus shuffle above South Beach

De Stapelwolk shuffle boven Zuiderstrand. DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 80 cm - 15 x 31 inches
painted on location -  Thurs 9 June 2016
SOLD

Yes ladies and gentle, not the Harlem Shuffle by Bob & Earl 1963, (made popular by the Rolling Stones cover), but the Cumulus shuffle, as these warm fluffy clouds dance across the sky on a lovely sunny morning here at South Beach, The Hague. This view dominated by warm tones, buildings catching the suns warm rays, just a pleasure to be able to bring to you the viewer this special moment.

Zuiderstrand s ochtend , 11/04/16
oil on canvas - 50 x 70 cm
painted on location - Monday 11 April 2016

Fine to see things starting to pick up here at South Beach, for the 2016 season. The same view, but as I say, time after time, never once the identical situation, thus each painting is unique. Leo from De Fuut, always proudly hanging the Dutch flag. You might have noticed, the blue building (The Hague Sailing Club) as changed format, compared to what it looked like in my previous paintings of this view. Here below a detail of the above work.
