Summer fun on South Beach, The Hague
Zomers plezier op Zuiderstrand, DH
oil on canvas - 30 x150 cm
Painted on location - 12 & 29 June 2025
€ 1450
Yes here we are at one of The Hague's top touristic attractions....THE BEACH!
The only city in Holland that has a beach. Others may be close to one, but not here, we have it right at our doorstep. Jump on a tram, get on a bike, or if you got a shit load of money, go with your car (I say that because parking is rather expensive). On any given sunny day the beach is jam packed, because in this country the term Carpe Diem is taken seriously and has significance.

Uncle Jans beachcomber's hut
Jutterskeet Ome Jan
oil on linnen - 50 x 60 cm
painted on location - Tues 29 April 2025
€ 525
I finally got around to making a painting of this most colorful beachcomber's hut located in the dunes not far from where I usually make my beach paintings. I'm definitely going to be revisiting this location, because hey, who can't use a little color in their lives!

Kijkduin Entrance to beach with Carousel.
Kijkduin Boulevard met carrousel.
oil on canvas - 50 x 120 cm
painted in the studio - several occasions Sept 2024 - Jan 2025
SOLD
It was great fun for me to create this painting, even though most of it was made from photos in the studio. I did actually go out once on location with the canvas already in progress, just to get a feel for the composition and atmosphere. It was awkward, as when I was their the carousel was no longer there. The whole of Kijkduin Boulevard is undergoing a major transformation. There is talk that the carousel will come back, but most likely at a different location.

Life, Fun and adventure at the Quite Beach, The Hague
Strandslag 10, Westduinpark, DH
oil on canvas - 40 x 100 cm
painted on location - Tues. 06 Aug 2024
SOLD
Invitation to fun and adventure, and why not? Especially for the little ones, and at this specific location for our four legged furry friends, who dart off like a bullet down that pathway to the beach, when they finally get unleashed from their owners. Most people like to come here as it's not so busy as a little further North where you have the Scheveningen beach.
Strandleven zomer 2024, de Stillestrand, DH
oil on canvas - 20 x 140 cm
painted on location - 02 Aug 2024
SOLD
Of course the beach is always much busier than what you see it in the painting. However as this is a painting and as such it takes about 2 or 3 hours to complete. When I get started the scene is not nearly as busy as compared to when I finish. What I strive for is to give the viewer some kind of indication as to the view being depicted. So one gets a sense of the size and spaciousness of the location.
oil on canvas - 50 x 60 cm
painted on location - 30 July 2024
SOLD
A recurring theme with me, painting of this brilliantly colored object on the Quite beach. And why not, makes for a great composition on this immense wide beach, breaking up the horizontal bleakness with masts shouting way up into the sky. The colors of the catamarans work well, a few people scattered here and there, the day is starting to take shape and I'm about to wrap up another plien-air painting.
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm
Painted on location - 29 July 2024
€ 1250
Kids love it when the water is so low, they can run in it for hours. Splashing water at each other, giggling, and just having a jolly old time. This is such a large work, that I had to work on it on two occasions. It's loaded with suttle details, this kind of painting is much more appreciated when looking at it in the real.

These paintings were made in the same week, thus decided to post them together. Lovely clouds worthy of painting, thus that is probably the reason I was out there! I always like to include a bit of beach life on these scenes, not too much mind you, as it gives the viewer an indication of the season.

Beach entrance #10, Westduinpark, The Hague (calm)
Strandslag 10, Westduinpark, DH (kalm)
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs 13 Oct 2022
SOLD
When I started this on going project, Wet Paintings from The Lowlands, beach entrances here in The Hague was one of the subjects I frequently painted. It is always a pleasure for me to return to this theme, and make new paintings. Even though the subject is the same, every painting made is never the same! As is evident in these two versions presented on this and the previous posting.

Just a wonderful day to be on location. As you can see lovely clouds floating by, creating a amazing play of light and dark tones on the Earthy colored Sea water. The flora in the dunes is also rich with colors, again thanks to the Sunlight. I also picked and chose which of the many sign poles are at this location, basically I eliminated about half of them.

Summer's in full swing
Let the summer begin
Painted on location - Wed 13 July 2022
oil on canvas - 50 x 100 cm
SOLD
Here I have re-worked a painting I made at this very location, however that was a winter scene, which I got fed up with, and decided to turn it into a fun summer scene. Painting from just beyond Kijkduin looking back towards Scheveningen.

Family outing at the beach
Familie-uitje op het strand
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
painted on location - Wed 21 July 2021
SOLD
Another fantastic day at the beach! Early afternoon and the crowds are still at bay, It's the middle of the week, thus won't really get that busy, but still by the time I put the signature on this baby, there were many more people than depicted on the painting. When one looks closely he will see that much is going on in this scene. Personally I like the father holding a bottle of water and the child runn8ng towards it.
Saturday morning at the beach
Zaterdag ochtend op het strand
oil on canvas - 30 x 150 cm
painted on location - Saturday 17 July 2021
SOLD
The fun and excitement is about to begin for many young kids and their families. Fun for everyone, even the pet dog has a blast. Water is a little choppy, so the parents are keeping a close eye on them. Parasols are being used to block the wind rather than the Sun. Plenty of space at this beach, because the average Dutch person thinks the beach of The Hague is Scheveningen and not this more natural beach. It's a well keep secert and we citizens of The Hague like it that way!

Parents and their children at the beach #5
Ouders en hun kinderen op het strand #5
oil on linnen - 50 x 175 cm
painted on location - Tues 11 Aug 2020
SOLD
The largest of this series was made on a really hot summers day, was off to an early start, thus most of the work was done, with comfortable temperature. I had to make use of the 3M parasol which I have ready for me at the strandpavilijoen De Staat, otherwise I would have melted in the heat! There is alot going on in this work, but not too much. I left out at least 70% of the crowds sunbathing or otherwise enjoying the fresh Sea water that afternoon. It was soo hot, i also felt compelled to take a dip in the Sea on a few occasions, with my shirt and shorts on.

Parent and thier children at the beach #4
Ouders en hun kindren op het strand #4
oil on canvas - 18 x 120 cm
painted on location - Thurs 6 Aug 2020
SOLD
Seeing these paintings being created I having decided to make this into a series. I will most likely make a few more before this season is over. A safe place for parents to play with or let their kids find like minded kids in which to have a fun time at the beach. No life threatening under currents to worry about, which at this beach is really a concern! Unfortuneately the Life Rescue Birgade (reddingsbrigade) has their work cut out for them in these days. Below 2 close ups.

Mates kicking the ball on the beach
Vrienden schoppen de bal op het strand
oil on MDF - 17 x 64cm
painted on location - Thurss 30 July 2020
SOLDThis is a classic view which I paint often. However every painting tellss a different story. Here it was early evening, as you can see space calor is to be found at this location. I was inspired to paint in those friends kicking a soccer ball, I liked the uniformity of their attire, and will it was jusst the right spice to give this view that special flavour.

Zuiderstrand commision painting
Study for Zuiderstrand commision painting
oil on canvas - 20 x 60 cmpainted on location - Tues 07 July 2020
SOLD
As this was the first time I make a painting of this view I decided a study would be a good idea. Thus a week before I made that larger painting below I made this smaller study to familiarise myself with this view. This helps me in making decisions about the final composition

Here is the final version of this commision scene. It is what the customer wanted, thick Dutch clouds sweeping across the sky, the dunes, a summery feeling. I had to wait for the right conditions, was lucky for me that this took place just a couple of days ago. Again here in this sceen I have omitted a very large new construction area, which is what the customer desired, and I must admit I would have left that elephant of a building which would have appeared just above the white roof of the 1st beach pavilion on the left side

Family fun by the Sea
Familie uitje aan Zee
oil on canvas - 30 x 120 cm
painted on location - Monday 27 April 2020
SOLD
My latest painted on a day the was comfortably warm, not really hot like in summer. With all this social distancing going on, there really is no place better to go than the spacious beaches we have right ar our doorstep. As long as not thousands show up at the same time, it is quiet safe. A simple composition, made lively with the those water pools on the forground, showing reflections of the kids enjoying the fresh water. A detail below, as this format is really difficult to represent properly on this social platform.

The Hague's South beach, Evening llight
Zuiderstrand s'Avonds
oil on canvas - 30 x 60 cm
painted on location - Thurs. 12 Sept 2019
SOLD
On a very windy beach, this painting was made. Lovely warm light from a descending Sun casts an intense light, softened up by all that sand blowing in the wind. I can never tire from painting this scenery. It is now being enhanced by the Strandbeesten by artist Theo Jansen. (those yellow strips on the sand, almost in the middle of painting)

A summer's day with nice clouds
Mooie volken op een zomers dag,
oil on canvas - 50 x 150 cm
painted on location - Thurs 18 July 2019
SOLD
An early morning view of what will turn out to be a busy day here at the beach in The Hague. Made to order, exactly what the customer wanted.
1. Not too many people.
2. the big picture of Zuiderstrand, thus the birds eye view. (it amazes me, how i manage to do this, I swear my feet are on the ground, when I painted this, yet it looks like it was made from higher up, a mystery!)
3.a lot of typical Dutch clouds in a clear blue sky, (this giving the impression of movement to the painting, which ultimately makes it interesting.)

The Quiet Beach awakens
Het Stillestrand wordt wakker
oil on linen - 90 x 150 cm
painted on location - Fri. 22 March 2019
SOLD
The cold Winter season has ended, slowly the Spring begins to usher in a lusher palette of colour, as Nature takes delight in the warmth and extra sunlight. It is not too uncommon to come across such a view of this beach, especially in the early morning hours. The fog slowly lifting, during the time whilst I was creating this painting. I worked with a hasty pace, getting on the linen as much information as possible, by the time I had decided to put my signature on this piece, the sky was entirely blue! Below a close ups for your viewing pleasure.

The Duin pond # 6 & Bicycling near Kijkduin
oil on canvas - 30 x 30 cm
painted on location - Wed 20 March 2019
SOLD
Up to now have been painting this scene with the morning Sunlight. Here I was on location late in the afternoon, and on an overcast day, thus no direct Sunlight. I have attempted to evoke moods of peace and tranquillity with this composition. Certainly the mist that was hovering over the trees in the background helped.
Fietsen bij Kijkduin
oil on canvas - 20 x 115 cm
painted on location - Sat 16 Feb. 2019
SOLD
A nice sunny winters day, to be on location. Too windy to be on the beach so I was inspired to capture this scene as the light was just perfect for it. In the distance one can barely see the Pier of Scheveningen, however a little closer and you can see the Harbour entrance with a couple of sailboats heading out.

The Beautiful Quiet Beach, DH
The Race is on, (In The Sky)
oil on canvas - 40 x 120 cm - (16 x 47 inches)
painted on location - Sunday 20 August 2017
SOLD
For the more adventurous, a very windy/mild storm situation, depicted in this scenery. The effects of light, due to the presence of those lovely fluffy clouds, racing by, in my opinion, make this an interesting view. A sailor with his Cat, getting ready to tackle the elements, kite surfers and Nature lovers alike, enjoying this afternoon, on the not so Quiet Beach here at Zuiderstrand, DH.
