Dutch skies can be very lively this time of the year. The clouds come and go at the speed of a blink of the eye. Makes it challenging to render them on linen with oils. But one does his or her best and the outcome will be unique to the creator of the work made. Of course with cloudy skies, shadows from the overcast moving clouds are inevitable, thus as the result in this painting.

Known as the quiet beach, this is the beach belonging to The Hague, which starts at Scheveningen harbor entrance and goes to the outskirts of Kijkduin, more or less what you see in the above painting. This time a nice peaceful scene, with calm and lazy waves gently caressing the beach.

Still early in the season, the beach cafes are in full swing to get the doors open for business. I took advantage of this unusually warm and windless day, with plenty of sunshine and decided to create this panoramic view of the "Quiet beach" with iew of Scheveningen on the horizon.

Finally I get around to making a painting of this scenery. And it probably won't be the only work I make of it. A beautiful monumental building with that equestrian statue on the square facing it make for a lovely composition.

Revisited a favorite place to paint quaint Dutch scenery, that for me is in Delft. Not too small and surely not a big city. That makes it easy to get around in, on foot or with a bicycle. Of course the tilt of that bell tower makes this a well photographed and documented subject.

A nice warm and sunny day, in the winter! What else can one ask for? Not much if you ask me. Of course I like many other people made it a point to be close to the Sea. Only difference is I take my painting gear with me and paint the scene at hand.

At the beginning of this month we finally got hit with a layer of snow that hung around for a few days! So I took advantage of the situation and thought it was time to rework a painting I had made 5 years prior (see image below), in the dunes that lead to the beach where I make most of my seascapes.  A fairly large painting, in inches 31.5" x 47".  I'm pleased with the balance of color, and the affect the snow has on the ground and water, which does a lot in harmonizing the scene. 

                                                                             

Mill De Korenaer, Loosduinen, Holland

This grain mill which is still in use since it was built in 1721, forms part of a unique park in Loosduinen, The Hague. Maintained by the  'Culrureel Erfgoed Loosduinen', a cultural heritage foundation  The church the Abdijkerk, the that long low building (Loosduins Museum) and that white house all together make this one of the most picturesque locations in the area.  Is it any wonder why I'm dedicating a series to this subject.  Depicted in this painting is a scene of the market during the Charles Dickens Festival.

A very well known location in the center of The Hague. Filled with mostly cafes, pubs and night clubs. A favorite place to socialize and hang out for the young crowd, both local and visitors. It is decorated with a colorful ceramic sculptor of Haagse Harry, a  beloved character from a comic strip created by a local cartoonist. 

This small painting was made as a study for the larger (40 x 100 cm)  more detailed painting shown below, which I created in commission by a customer.
