Dutch skies can be very lively this time of the year. The clouds come and go at the speed of a blink of the eye. Makes it challenging to render them on linen with oils. But one does his or her best and the outcome will be unique to the creator of the work made. Of course with cloudy skies, shadows from the overcast moving clouds are inevitable, thus as the result in this painting.

Known as the quiet beach, this is the beach belonging to The Hague, which starts at Scheveningen harbor entrance and goes to the outskirts of Kijkduin, more or less what you see in the above painting. This time a nice peaceful scene, with calm and lazy waves gently caressing the beach.

Still early in the season, the beach cafes are in full swing to get the doors open for business. I took advantage of this unusually warm and windless day, with plenty of sunshine and decided to create this panoramic view of the "Quiet beach" with iew of Scheveningen on the horizon.

Finally I get around to making a painting of this scenery. And it probably won't be the only work I make of it. A beautiful monumental building with that equestrian statue on the square facing it make for a lovely composition.

Revisited a favorite place to paint quaint Dutch scenery, that for me is in Delft. Not too small and surely not a big city. That makes it easy to get around in, on foot or with a bicycle. Of course the tilt of that bell tower makes this a well photographed and documented subject.

A nice warm and sunny day, in the winter! What else can one ask for? Not much if you ask me. Of course I like many other people made it a point to be close to the Sea. Only difference is I take my painting gear with me and paint the scene at hand.

At the beginning of this month we finally got hit with a layer of snow that hung around for a few days! So I took advantage of the situation and thought it was time to rework a painting I had made 5 years prior (see image below), in the dunes that lead to the beach where I make most of my seascapes.  A fairly large painting, in inches 31.5" x 47".  I'm pleased with the balance of color, and the affect the snow has on the ground and water, which does a lot in harmonizing the scene.

This grain mill which is still in use since it was built in 1721, forms part of a unique park in Loosduinen, The Hague. Maintained by the  'Culrureel Erfgoed Loosduinen', a cultural heritage foundation  The church the Abdijkerk, the that long low building (Loosduins Museum) and that white house all together make this one of the most picturesque locations in the area.  Is it any wonder why I'm dedicating a series to this subject.  Depicted in this painting is a scene of the market during the Charles Dickens Festival.

A very well known location in the center of The Hague. Filled with mostly cafes, pubs and night clubs. A favorite place to socialize and hang out for the young crowd, both local and visitors. It is decorated with a colorful ceramic sculptor of Haagse Harry, a  beloved character from a comic strip created by a local cartoonist. 

This small painting was made as a study for the larger (40 x 100 cm)  more detailed painting shown below, which I created in commission by a customer.

This is the third painting made in this series which I decided to undertake. The idea being to start and finish the painting in one plein air session, so far it's working. I'm happy that I was able to keep the brush strokes fluid and loose. However upon close observation you will discover intriguing details here and there. This one was started late in the morning and finished just after 4.30pm.

This was a mega project to undertake, however as it's not the first time I am painting this scenery, I had some advantage. Most of the work on this painting was done on location, however a lot of reworking also took place in the studio.  The thing about this composition is that it is so busy with all those yachts and sailboats with there masts climbing to enormous heights. However not only what's happening on the water but what takes place on the land. All those buildings, man, all that detail to consider. For the most part I choose to merely suggest the details such as the balconies and windows. It would have been just too much for the human eye to digest. Lastly let's not overlook what's happening in the sky. Those luscious Dutch clouds, of which Holland is renowned for, is most likely what inspired me to render this view in such a manner. Winter has just slipped away, promises of warm delightful summer days are guaranteed, this is merely a sign of what is to come! Enjoy the view.

Yes here we are at one of  The Hague's top touristic attractions....THE BEACH!

The only city in Holland that has a beach. Others may be close to one, but not here, we have it right at our doorstep. Jump on a tram, get on a bike, or if you got a shit load of money, go with your car (I say that because parking is rather expensive).  On any given sunny day the beach is jam packed, because in this country the term Carpe Diem is taken seriously and has significance.

Back at this location to continue on this Invitation to fun and adventure series. A whole different vibe to this painting compared to the other three thus far. I decided to soften the tones as the situation present whilst I was on location, was somewhat misty however still a lot of light shining through the covered sky.

A little bit off the beat and path for me, but always fun to be on location here. Beach life is almost in full swing here, but as you know, it really depends on the weather.  As I usually like to be on location before the big crowds show up, thus the not so populated beach.

On a nice sunny day I headed out to this location intent on creating this panoramic view of this beach with its vista all the way to Noordwijk Aan Zee. From the area known as Zwartepad I set up my gear rather close to the dunes thus allowing me to create this composition which features the strandpaviljoen Naturel, a detail of a strandbeest from Theo Janssen.

Sometimes just painting two crashing waves is enough of a challenge and gets me inspired to make a painting. As what happened on this particular occasion. I don't always have an explanation for things, but something about the coloration on the waters surface and all that activity of the water in movement made it interesting for me.

For me this is the most picturesque entrance on this stretch of beach. Thus it is no wonder that I go time and again to this location.  I like that one sees a section of the cafe, complete with flags, the childrens playground, pastel colored parasols and that colorful sign of the name of this cafe, Zuid (which in English translates to South).  The cloudy and windy conditions gives birth to an overall earthy tone to the Sea which is in harmony with the grass covered dunes.

The second attempt at this scene, a smaller size this time. Again the weather conditions create all those juicy earth tone colors in the Sea. I rather enjoyed painting that cloud covered sky with all those variations of warm greys. The colorful objects attached to the beach cafe create a breath of freshness which is pleasing to the eye.

Here you have the first attempt of this scene from this series in the year 2025.  The sky as you can see clearly defines the coloration of the Sea. Due to the sunny conditions, it was a little busier at the beach, thus the bicycles and that car which belongs to the beach cafe.

The first painting of this new series I decided to create. I love it when the scenery being painted is covered primarily in mist. Gives the painting a quality of mystery, because not everything is so defined. This leaves room for the viewers imagination to fill in the details!

Years ago I used to visit Delft quite regularly, making several works on location in small and medium formats, mostly oil paintings but also a variety of sketches in pastels, charcol and ink. It was with great pleasure for me to be back in this lovely quaint city. The location in this painting is actually very well known, it was even featured in a 1979 film by Werner Herzog, called Nosferatu - The Vampire, staring Klaus Kinski.  I was lucky to have this fantastic lighting available, which I noted  made itself available for a brief 20 to 30 minute period in the late afternoon.

Red and white stripped lighthouse at the harbor entrance is always on the North side, the south side has a greenish tinted stripped lighthouse. Learned that on todays painting session from an older fisherman who's been fishing off this location for years!

A favorite location for many people living in Scheveningen. Not to mention the many fishermen that fish off of this massive harbor entrance protection wall. Of course like all harbors in Europe and worldwide I think the Northly arm has always a red light and colored in red. I like this location a lot, as I have painted several views off of it.

Hey, hey, I'm finally happy with the way this scene has worked out on this large format canvas. Working largely from memory, reference photos and paintings already made of simular subject matter, I came to create this painting. Clouds casting shadows on the agitated waters of the North Sea, one should and hopefully feels the cool windy breeze, just by gazing at this painting. On the bottom right  a young flowering bush, showing promises of spring!
